The idea of building underground bunkers is not new, as they have historically been associated with wartime shelters. Max Levchin, one of the founders of PayPal, stated that about half of the people who became filthy rich due to the new economy have invested in an “emergency plan.” Mark Zuckerberg for example is underway in his construction for his 200 million dollar Kauai, Hawai residence that features an underground bunker.
So why is it now that multiple billionaires have just recently bought or are starting to build bunkers?
With the rise in popularity of the new movie, Leave The World Behind, social media conspiracies have been all over the place, trying to figure out why these bunkers are being made.
Some think its protection from nuclear war, natural disasters or a cyber attack, while others think its protection from a revolt against their economic privileges. While conspiracy is in the air, it is hard to truly know why these billionaires are making bunkers.
The billionaire fascination with underground bunkers reflects a growing sense of unease and a desire for control in an uncertain world. While the motivations are rooted in personal concerns, the societal implications cannot be ignored. As the global elite continue to invest in these subterranean mansions, it prompts a broader conversation about wealth distribution, social responsibility and the collective resilience of societies facing an increasingly unpredictable future.
