The 66th annual Grammys occurred on February 4. With about 16.9 million viewers this year, people were excited to see various performances and what awards different artists would win. Favored performances such as Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing “Fast Car” received a standing ovation and was rated one of the top 2024 Grammy performances according to the Washington Post.
There were multiple heartwarming moments at the Grammys, but one of the audience’s favorites was when SZA won a Grammy for best R&B song, “Snooze.” SZA ran on stage giving Lizzo who presented the Grammy to her a big hug. In her speech, she began to get teary-eyed and said, “You don’t really understand. I came really, really far, and I can’t believe this is happening. It feels very fake.”
Another special moment at the Grammys was when Billie Eilish performed her single “What was I Made For?”. She also won song of the year for this song and acknowledged the recent movie Barbie for using her song in the movie and exemplifying the meaning of it.
An exciting surprise at the Grammys was Taylor Swift announcing her new album coming out April 19, called The Tortured Poets Department. Swift announced this when she won a Grammy for best pop vocal album. “This is my 13th Grammy. This is my lucky number. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that,” Swift said. People were surprised by this unexpected announcement as she received her Grammy award. Cameras were focused on Swift throughout most of the Grammy awards showing her cheering on and supporting her peers.
Although the 2024 Grammys was filled with exciting performances and memorable speeches, there was a certain “upset” that people have been discussing. Killer Mike won best rap song for “Scientists and Engineers”, best rap performance and best rap album for Michael. Although Killer Mike has numerous fans, people believe he should not have won all these titles over Travis Scott and his album Utopia. Scott’s fans were upset because they believed Mike’s album Michael is not comparable to Scott’s album Utopia. Not only did Mike get hated on by Scott’s fans for this, he then got arrested backstage at the Grammys for an alleged misdemeanor. In a later interview with Mike on The Daily Show, Mike explained how he was very thankful for winning and acknowledged his contributors to success.
The 66th annual Grammys will be memorable for people because it had unique highlights to it and of course honored the different artists’ success.
