On August 7, A new Dance Moms spin-off was created, following a new dance teacher named Gloria “Glo” Hampton.
The show features a new cast of characters and seems to be a lot more of a positive space than the show’s previous seasons. The latest positive space is a step in the right direction for this show; however, some of the dances shown have been controversial, in the eyes of the audience.
For example, there was a Jon Benet Ramsey dance. If you don’t know who she was, Ramsey was a pageant contestant. She competed in ten pageants, seven of them being from 1996. Unfortunately, she was reported missing on December 26, and her father found her dead in their basement that same day.
In Dance Moms, a dancer named Ashlan Schiede performed this dance. The dance was not meant to be controversial, but some of the actions done in the dance came across as that way. For example, when, at the end of the dance, she put her hands on her neck and portrayed herself as being strangled.
Another controversial dance was the group dance about fentanyl and drug overdose. The dancers would slowly die off and be put in body bags, and this came across as very weird because the message was meant to be good and to spread awareness. Still, the dancers were not mature enough to do a piece like this because they were around eight to 11 years old.
