The first celebrity scandal of 2020 can be summarized by one fictional word: MEGXIT. If that doesn’t ring a bell, that is the title the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to “exit” their roles as senior members of the royal family.

On January 8, the Instagram account of Harry and Meghan (@SussexRoyal) posted a photo of the two holding hands accompanied by a lengthy statement. This post was intended to announce their decision to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent.” The statement continues on to say that along with baby Archie, the couple will be splitting their time between the UK and North America.

The story only begins there though. The drama continued to unfold in the following days, due to various media outlets and social networks. First, baby Archie was said to be with a close friend during the time of the announcement. Fans speculate that this was in fear of his safety being in jeopardy amid the controversy. Also, a summit was held with the other senior members of the Royal Family to formally address the logistics of Harry and Meghan’s decision. Following the meeting, the Queen shared that the family does “respect and understand” their decision and that more details will be hammered out regarding their new role within the Royal Family.

Die-hard fans of the couple cannot help but wonder what is next? Will they be living in Calabasas with the Kardashians or in a mansion somewhere in Toronto? Maybe even book and movie deals will emerge now that they are working to become “financially independent”.
