After the first game of the season for our Episcopal Eagles we are off to a great start, as we beat both Duval Charter & Joshua Christian. The eighth grade quarterback, Justice Turpin ‘30, had to step up to fill a role, in which he did, finishing with 16-25 completions, all while obtaining 355 yard passing and 8 touchdowns (TDs). After these two elite performances I took it upon myself to interview Turpin and ask him about his game day routine.
What did you do in order to prepare for these games mentally and physically?
“Before the game I usually take the time to pray and then eat. Once I’m in the locker room, I’ll listen to some pre-game music to intensify my mood. To me it’s important that I take my time to stretch and get my arm ready for the game.”
How are you taking the pressure of being an eighth grade Varsity quarterback?
“I feel comfortable in my position because I know my talent is God-given, and I believe in my blockers and my receivers to make a play. I’d say my biggest flaw was to learn the playbook, but now I feel settled in my role with the first game of the season being a win. I’m looking forward to moving forward and improving with the guys.”
How did you and your teammates build chemistry leading up to the games?
“The bond we built at Camp Weed before the preseason helped boost the chemistry and the fun activities with the players and the coaches created a tight-knit group. Also, the summer workouts prepared us to work hard and stay determined through hard times during the games.”
What are some goals you have set for yourself and the team this season?
“I want to hit 2,000 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns this season. I believe the team will go far as the year is starting off promising.”
After the interview I can conclude that Turpin was very confident in his answers, expressing pride in the team. I believe he will achieve his goals and more. The team now 3-0 faces 3-1 Providence at their place this week.
