Since the start of his second term, Donald Trump has threatened to invade Greenland, a territory of Denmark, multiple times. Even though Trump has no plan to take over Greenland and has scaled back his threat of invasion, the possibility is still concerning.
The primary reason why this invasion would be a mistake is that it would deteriorate the United State’s relationship with Europe and possibly cause the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to dissolve.
This would happen because Europe has largely stood behind Denmark and would not support a US invasion. NATO, the defense agreement between the US, Canada, and multiple European countries, possibly could dissolve because the organization has never faced the crisis of a member state, the US, attacking another member state, Denmark.
While NATO does have a way of dealing with attacks on member states, Article 5, it is only primarily used when a non-member state attacks a member state, and is unlikely to be used if a member state attacked another.
Ultimately, NATO could possibly dissolve due to internal divisions over a US invasion.
It would be a significant problem if NATO dissolved or faced internal divisions because ever since the beginning of the cold war, the purpose of the alliance was to counter the Soviet Union, now Russia.
A weakened NATO would make Russia stronger and could cause Russia to invade Estonia and or Latvia, both member states of NATO who border Russia.
Since NATO would be busy dealing with the US invasion of Greenland, they would not be able to defend these two countries, and it would be unlikely that they would receive US support.
Ukraine would also be in trouble because without aid from NATO, Russia would be able to invade more parts of Ukraine and demand more territory from Ukraine in a potential peace treaty.
In all these cases, a weaker NATO would make Russia a stronger power.
A US invasion of Greenland would be a terrible mistake because it would lead to the deterioration of the United State’s relationship with Europe and NATO, which would lead to Russia becoming stronger.
