What you wear to school may seem like a small detail, but it actually has a big impact on how well you learn. Dressing comfortably helps students focus, feel confident within themselves and stay engaged in their learning.
When clothes become uncomfortable for students, being itchy or too tight, they become a distraction. It’s often noticed that students will begin to tug at their clothes, and in general be unfocused and fidgety, taking their attention away from what needs to be focused on. Comfortable clothing allows students to forget about what they are wearing, so they can lead their focus into what they’re learning. By seeing all this evidence of students being affected by what they are wearing, you’d think schools would change the concept of a uniform.
Wearing comfortable clothes make people feel more comfortable within themselves as well. After speaking to some students, many mentioned how when they feel physically comfortable, their mind feels comforted as well, leading them to be more active in learning. Overall, it seems that confidence when learning comes from feeling relaxed and comfortable.
Scientifically, your mental state is affected by your body. Being hot, cold, or just overall uncomfortable causes your brain to have to work harder to stabilize yourself. Comfortability maintains physical balance, allowing your brain to focus on memory. When dressed comfortably, you’re going to be more relaxed and feel more confident. This allows for your environment to feel more welcoming as well, reducing stress and calming you as a student down.
Dressing comfortably does not equate to being careless, or lazy, but it creates a better space for learning, being more mentally at ease and free from distractions. Overall, comfort becomes a better way of learning.
